I use a Skytec flyweight starter. The gear housing is very weak, mine
cracked at a backfire once, and I know of at least 3 more that has cracked
in the same place. I beleive my backfire was because of a weak battery (it
takes 250A, as opposed to 150A for the prestolite). Yes the gears are
plastic, and they survived the backfire. What is wrong with plastic ? There
was no problem ordering spareparts from skytec, at a reasonable price, and
to rebuild it myself. The gear housing was $75.
