Chris,
Please don't try to heat treat your tubes at home.  Firstly, you don't have
the proper procedural specs and secondly, your oven isn't quite up to the
900 degree task.  Do you have a quenching tank?  What will you use for the
cool down cycle... your wrist watch and a good guess?
I was the back shop inspector at Santa Barbara Aerospace in the years
'97-'98 and I found the aluminum heat treat process complex, to say the
least.  As a newbie, I defered to the more experienced inspectors when a
judgement call was required.  We had printed tape readouts of all our ovens'
temps/times and that let us double check the process.  Those records are
part of any repair done on a transport airplane.  5052-0 Al is only one of
many types of Al you might encounter.  Be sure to find the proper spec.
The flame/smoke/oxyclean method isn't up to today's technology.
Furthermore, a properly made flare should need no annealing.  The work
hardening done in the process is expected and is not detrimental to the
final piece.  If it were, AC 43.13 would have a follow up instruction.
Good tube making is an art and homebuilders need to practise in order to
become proficent.  Nice workmanship will pay back the builder down the road
with fewer leaks and problems; the worst of which might be a stuck gear!
Thanks,
