Recent gear-up quadrant incident for filing in your memory banks: I
recently departed on a long cross-country in my IVP, and after about 15 min
in the climb-out noted that the hydraulic pump had come on--and stayed on.
Took a look around the panel, and noted that the gear postition handle had
drifted down about 1cm. When I pushed it back up, the hydraulic pump
stopped. Let it go and the handle drifted down again over 5 min--pump came
back on. Closer inspection of the handle showed that the whole drum was
slightly loose (could be wiggled with the gear handle about 2mm side to
side). Landed, took out the quadrant cover, and found that the allen-head
bolt holding the gear handle drum had loosened over the 4yrs and 505 hrs of
flight on the plane. Re-tightened the bolt with more locktite, and flew
away--no problems since. Would suggest this item be added to your careful
annual condition inspections.
