Colin:

There must be somthing wrong with your flaring tool, your flaring technique
or both, to have the failures you describe. I'm guessing the tubing supplied
was most likely 5052-O (as was mine - with which I've had no problems) which
should withstand the pressures in the Lancair hydro system, given a proper
flare is formed at each connection.

Assuming you formed good flares at each connection, the only other thing
that could cause said failures is the wrench. I've seen guys really crank
down, using the automotive "armstrong method" of tightening a nut on AN
fittings way past the recommended torque. Do this and you can cause the
flare to extrude and eventually fail. These things should be threaded on
until just snug and then taken about 1 or 1 1/2 flats further. Since the
tubing is a soft (not weak, but in the -O condition which is fairly soft so
it can be flared and easily formed) it will deform inside the fitting if
overtightened, ruining the quality of the union.
