The bullet proof solution is this.
Thread the teflon through one half hinge, take a fresh razor blade and cut
off the teflon between each hinge loop, take the pieces and thread them into
the other hinge half, take the rod and sharpen one end of the rod leaving
the tip rounded so as not to catch in the teflon, lubricate the teflon with
silicone, put the halves together and thread the rod though. this should
avoid bunching and you still have the bearing surface.
