Besides the engine size you need to look at long or short engine mount, big or small tail and big or small wheels. I have the small wheels. I will not land on a grass field. I have 2,000 flying hours with 300 in my Lancair. Last year, I kept my plane at Plymouth, MI(1D2) for 3 months. Plymouth has a 2,556 ft runway. Every other time I landed I was standing on the brakes in order to stop by the end of the runway. I am sure that there are some 320 pilots that could consistently land here, but not me. Maybe in 400 hours, but not at this time. If anything went wrong with the brakes, and this has happened to me in the past, an accident would have been inevitable. I don't believe that there are ANY 235, 320 or 360 pilots that could consistently land on a 1,700 ft grass strip without an accident. Now on the other hand, if my plane was trailered to the 1,700 ft grass field, I believe that I could get out OK. -- Lorn H.
