I have done some research and found that the times range from 2-1/2 years to 10 years of build time. The new fast build options probably lower that number but how much is yet to be determined since none have been finished. Finally one very important note of caution: In terms of professional builders, be advised that the MAJORIATY of Lancair IVP crashes have been in planes which were built by "professional" builders. Similarly, many of the best of show winners have also been built by professional builders. It is kind of like playing russian roulette with three bullets! If you think this cannot happen to you please search this forum for information on the crash of N424E. This was an expert 747 Capt. with 1000 hrs in Lancairs. The evidence at present points to incorrect building of the wing venting system and slosh doors being the cause of the crash. PLEASE NOTE: If this is true you should know NO ONE except the builder himself could have known this was a problem as it was not visable once the wing was closed. So if you need a builder to help you check him out VERY VERY Carefully! Ask to personally meet every person who he has build planes for and inspect every plane. Make sure that the person you hire has at least one if not more A&P at his shop who knows how REAL airplanes are built. Tell the builder that he must accompany the pilot on ALL test flights for the first 100 hours. I found that once I implemented this policy the work was done with much more care and attention. Then as for the money, place the funds in an excrow and have a lawyer draw up a contract that only allows release from escrow monies as specific completion targets are met. Have those completion targets inspected by a Lancair expert builder or better yet DAR. Have a penalty clause built in to punish the builder if he failes to meet his completion schedule and hold him to these time frames...after all he has your money tied up and he set the schedule when you hired him so make him perform! Finally, hire an expert to chek out the plane and help you fly off the hours during the restriction phase.
