It's too bad Jim and I weren't building our Lancairs at the same time. I also had oil cooler problems and, after much experimentation with plenums, external air exits and scoops, I also found the solution was to completely smooth and route the air flow into the NACA scoop exit. Although I have an IO 320, I use the smaller 7-vane cooler mounted on the firewall and simply dump the cooler exit air into the lower cowling along with the engine cooling exit air. I have had to install a pilot controlled air shut-off door on the entry to the cooler plenum to keep the oil temps up during flights in cool air even though the NACA is located 4 inches below the cowl split on the undesireable left side.
