After reporting the on my investigation of a nose gear collapse on landing
incident I ordered a new gas strut for my airplane. I removed the old strut
and compared it to the new one using a bathroom scale. The new strut
produced 130 pounds of force. The old strut produced only 58!! It seems time
and heat had taken their toll.
After thinking about it for a while I felt really stupid. I had replaced the
door strut two years ago because it wasn't holding up the door anymore. I
cannot explain why it didn't occur to me that the nose gear strut was in the
same sad shape.
I would strongly recommend that you spend the extra $30 every 2 years or 100
hours for a replacement strut.
Regards
Brent Regan
