Cold starting is no problem. Hot starting can be--especially in hot weather. Most problems occur in the 15-60 minute time range after shut down (such as fuel stop on cross country flight).< Jim; I remember hearing a long time ago about temperature doing something to a magneto, and until it cooled down, it would not fire. I'm not familiar with the actual mechanics of the magneto but if memory serves me correctly, something expanded/tightened on the shaft and would not permit contacts to open/close or whatever. Seemed that something was binding while hot. Wasn't a problem while flying because of cooling air but more of a problem during the 'heat soak' period after shut down and no cooling air. When I had my Duke, I had one engine that would light up at first crank no matter how hot it was. The other would sometimes take 15 - 20 minutes (after it had been shut down for ~ 20 minutes) before I could get a single ignition fire, and with that single fire it would start and run smoothly as if it was the first start-up of the day.
