I was the last person to see Tony alive. Frankly, I am still
struggling with this accident.
In the process of evaluating what may have gone wrong, a question
has come up and the other Lancair IV-P owners can help further this
investigation, if they would.
How many owners/operators of Lancair IV aircraft have:
1)Ever run a tank dry on the ground and then observed how much fuel
it takes to refill the tank? What was the result?
2) Ever run a tank dry in the air and then landed and observed how
much fuel it takes to refill the tank? What was the result?
3) Ever done both 1) and 2) ? Any difference from on the ground
to in the air re-fills?
4) Ever experimented with a nearly dry tank (say 2-4 gallons left)
in the air to see if you could get the tank to un port with unusual
attitudes ?
One of the reasons I ask this is because we had a Lancair IV-P here
on Friday, for a tweak of the GAMIjectors. That aircraft would only hold 31
gallons in one wing and 32 in the other. Not 40 and 40. Under at least one
scenario, Tony may have burned as little as 62 to 64 gallons on the way to
Flagstaff. For the obvious reasons, when I discovered that the Lancair
IV-P sitting on my ramp on Friday would only hold 63 gallons, my attention
became focused on this issue.
Any actual, solid information on this subject would be very
gratefully appreciated. If you wish to respond to me privately, that is
also, ok. gwbraly@gami.com. If you wish me to keep the information
confidential, I will honor that request.
Last, if you have never actually run a tank dry in flight, then
landed (using the other, hopefully full tank) and checked how much fuel the
tank would accept, I would urge you to consider making that investigation on
each tank, before pushing the range of your aircraft. I do this routinely
in any new aircraft that I am flying, before making any long range trip. It
often provides surprising results.
Thank you. George Braly
