I agree that the newer engines are definitely unproven engines, however they
show a lot of hope for the future but for now
the Cont/Lycoming engines can be vastly improved with today's technology.
They can be brought up from the 1930's to present.  I'm currently building
up a Cont IO-520 for a Lancair Super ES.  What I've done thus far is put new
cylinders and flow balance.  From what the computerized flow bench shows me,
I should be able to get 330 HP.  An aftermarket cam and it has been dynode
in other engines has produced 19 extra ponies.  I've also ceramic coated the
combustion chamber, exhaust port and valve.  The intake and exhaust system
have also been ceramic coated.  I have dry aero lubed (a dry lubricant) on
the crank shaft, cam shaft, gears, piston skirt and pins.  This will cut
down on wear of the engine and help protect the engine from corrosion.  Dual
electronic ignition has been installed for fuel efficiency and performance
in altitude.  I have removed the alternator from the front, covered the hole
and installed a B&C alternator and pulley on the crank shaft.  I've found a
company who is rebuilding the right hand starter drive unit.  They are
removing the spring and the shaft, which always breaks, and replacing it
with a redundant clutch system.  This will allow me to install a light
weight starter. If I took all the numbers on the HP rating, it would
UNBELIEVABLE!  That's why I'm going to dynode it with 4 different exhaust
systems to find out what the actual HP rating will be.  The only number that
is certain thus far is the one the computer reads on the flow balancing of
the heads, 330 HP and that's pretty darn good.
