Certificated piston aircraft engines are; heavy, vibrate too much, cost too much, burn too much fuel, don't last long enough, take far too much attention to operate correctly, and are prone to failure. 2. Outside of turbine engines, there is no viable alternative. Unfortunately, no other engines out there can beat what we've got. Anything else is either too heavy, too complex, too expensive, not available, unproven, or some combination thereof. Till there is a powerplant that is PROVEN, we have only pipe dreams. To me, "proven", means a significant number of stock engines ran by ordinary customers to TBO, overhauled and put back into service. Proven does not mean less that 1,000 hours on a prototype that has been only operated by the designers. Having said all that, I have tremendous respect for those, smarter than I, who are designing new aircraft engines. Most of them have realized soon into the game, all the complexities involved in aircraft propulsion. With all these brilliant engineers around us, there is no doubt in my mind that a suitable alternative to Lyc/Con will sooner or later come, it just hasn't yet. To this point, all other engines are heavier, more expensive, and have not been proven.
