If your wings were already installed at the factory (as mine were) and they
are level with the shaer box and bushings as well as the gear box then why do
you have to put the wings on to ensure the horizontal is level with the
wings? By that point you can't do anything about the wings anyway.
[You may have heard the saying that "the wings and stab do the flying, the
fuselage is just along for the ride"... while it's (almost)true that you
can't do anything about the wings at this stage, having them on the
airplane when it's time to install the stab is a pretty sure way to
insure that everything is going to line up properly. While you can
triangulate from the tips of the stab to the fuselage C/L at the firewall
to insure that it's mounted perpendicular to the fuselage C/L, and you can
measure the level with your Smart-Tool or a water level to insure that it's
not tilted in the roll plane, having the wings on to visually verify
that everything is square and parallel when viewed from the front or rear
is the best method to insure that everything is just so. You'd be surprised
at how small a degree of misalignment you can pick up with the naked eye.
Judges don't walk around with smart levels, they step back from the airplane
and use a critical eye to see if everything looks right. You also get to
measure from the tips of the stab to the tips of the wings to insure that
they're parallel, and this is the wrong stage of the game to take a shortcut
because it's too much trouble to install the wings.
