Any welding supply house (BOC Gases, etc) should have 1/16 inch (.0625) by 3 feet stainless steel welding rods. When you buy a package, you will have enough for the whole neighborhood. Mine have been installed on the ailerons, flaps and elevators for over 250 hours of flying with no dusting or apparent wear other than where the metal meets. One of the ways to eliminate excessive aileron movement due to system lash is to eliminate the dead band at neutral by rigging them slightly high so there is a very small air load on both ailerons. Hinges longer than 10 or 12 inches are very difficult to fill since the teflon tubing can easily wrinkle and collapse. Hinges under pressure because of slight curves, such as the inboard gear doors, are impossible. Legacy builders probably won't be able to use this technique since the aileron hinges run the entire length of the aileron and the flaps and elevators don't use piano hinges. Some excess tubing and rods will be available at the North Central Lancair Fly-In (23 & 24 June, KJOT). Bring a screwdriver, wrench and wire cutter and we can change yours over while you wait (Jiffy Tube)! Remember, supplies are limited.
