I was about to say "Hell, no!" until I read Aaron May's post. He said it
pretty well. There's no doubt that the Legacy is a quicker-build version of
an already quick-build kit. I examined the Legacy at Oshkosh last year and
realized that after 800 hours building my "super fast build" 360, I was just
about where the Legacy is right out of the box.
More telling is Aaron's point about the learning curve. The right side of my
airplane is being built in half the time of the left. It's that steep. Now,
I don't really always start on the left side and then do the right side, but
my point is still valid. The second 360 I build (were I masochistic enough
to do it twice, which I'm not) would go much faster than the first.
Buy the engine package, farm out the avionics, the body work and the paint,
and yes, it should happen real quick. You'll probably also double the price,
too. But 500 hours? I don't really think so, especially not for a first
timer, but I'd easily believe 1000.
Hell. I've talked to builders who have spent more than 1000 hours just
sanding! Who's gonna complain if their Legacy were to take all of 1000 hours
instead of the advertised 500?
The Legacy is a nice kit and probably represents the pinnacle of the 2-place
Lancair family. (Okay, Lance, prove me wrong...) Too bad I couldn't afford
one -- though I could afford a 360 fast build and that's another story
entirely -- so if you're on the fence about buying one my recommendation is
to jump into the deep end of the pool and just do it (if I may mix my
metaphors a little). You probably won't get your first flight after 500
hours of building but you'll be making progress mighty fast.
