Not stupid, Bob - Right on the money.
The Mazda engineers figured you would indeed have their stock muffler system
which does hold down the boost due to back pressure. In fact, one of the
problems when guys put on some after market (and free flowing) exhaust
systems on their Turbo RX-7s was all of a sudden they have over-boost
problems. As best I recall there was a pre-silencer, CAT converter and a
muffler in the exhaust system - well, I think the turbos did not have the
pre-silencer. But, in any case, enough there to produce back pressure which
kept the boost level down.
