Pardon the abrupt de-lurking, but here's random thought for consideration in
the current discussion on boost control.
Would it be possible to have the bleed air from a BOV actuate a "manual
override" of the wastegate, opening it up to alleviate the overboost
condition from the exhaust gas side.
Wouldn't this create a self-regulating feedback loop? You could set the BOV
for your maximum desired boost to protect the engine. Since it doesn't just
pop fully open but opens gradually against a spring, it would also begin to
gradually override the wastegate setting to slow the turbine down, which
should mitigate the issues Ed described as problems with a BOV.
I certainly haven't thought this all the way through, and I'm not sure how
to go about building such an actuator, but I'm interested in comments from
the gallery.
