""" By the way, I was showing 38 MAP at 11,500 ft with the
wastegate fully open. However, there's an open 1/2 inch air
bleed on the intercooler (to be closed off) and a blow off valve, so
the turbo may have been putting out much more than the MAP
showed."""
That doesn't sound right. How big is the wastegate, and what style
(ie, throttle plate or Delta-gate (or Race-gate)? With the wastegate
fully open the majority of the exhaust should be bypassing the turbo.
Or am I misunderstanding your comment? WOuldn't be the first time.

Marvin,
John's comments are probably right on
the money. One of the most significant problems is that the stock turbo's
have small, internal wastegates. They are barely adequate in
the cars, even with serious restrictions in the intake, and exhaust
systems. His numbers indicate that he was putting out close to 10
psi, plus whatever he was losing through the half inch hole. When you
consider that he was doing this for hours, rather than seconds (as it was
designed for), it's not surprising that it failed. I've got my
fingers crossed for the Oz mod. At least it should give the turbo a
fighting chance.
Cheers,
