It's normal to have some
side to side play in the turbo shaft, but there should not be any end to end
play. It was explained to me that the shaft runs on a layer of oil, so it
has some slop when there's no oil flow. Not a perfect explanation, but I
can live with it. The wheel should not be able to touch the wall of the
turbo housing due to side play. If it can, I'd suspect that's bad.

I don't know what the "gum"
is, but it sure sounds like it came from the exhaust. Perhaps it could be
the leftovers from burnt oil, or coolant. Just don't know. Is the
inside if the exhaust pipe gummy as well? Are you missing anything that
could have been injested into the engine and spit out as goo?
