It finally dawned on
me that I am not running to rich, but that I am burning oil (white smoke).
I am far too embarrassed to taxi around the airport anymore. So I have
sent off the turbo to be re-built, hope that fixes it. Taking off the
turbo seemed to confirm the problem as the manifold before the turbo is
white/dry while the exhaust pipe has drops of engine oil.
Hi Dave,
Well, at least it's nice to start with a fresh
rebuilt. Have them port the wastegate as large as possible while it's
there, and maybe do something else to reduce the boost at low rpms. This
is a prime opportunity to try to head off some of the boost problems you're
going to have.
As for your oil, make sure the drain line from the
turbo has NO pressure. The inlet side has a restriction built in, and the
normal outlet pipe is a large diameter, with gravity assist to the sump.
You aren't supposed to let this tube go uphill, or restrict it in any way, or
you'll push oil out past the bearings. Come to think of it, a solenoid
that restricts the oil drain could make a good smoke system, but don't run it
too long :-)
Cheers,
Rusty (no, I've never watched the Ice Pilots
either)
