Well,
Not all are like that. I took apart an 89 nt
from a rx7 (the guy wrecked it and left it in his yard for years and then began
selling parts off it), rebuilt it, and put it in a 91 convertible nt. It was a
clean as a whistle in the coolant passages (some white residue), but the engine
was carboned up to the hilt and all the springs and seals were stuck. I had to
DIG them out. The eccentric shaft would not turn. I guess you just can’t
tell what you’ve got……..The worst part was cleaning the engine,
all the rest (except setting the run out spacers) was relatively easy.

Specialties engine warning
As you may recall, I bought one of the RX-7 Specialties
engines, and recently sent it to Bruce for rework. Adam at RX-7
Specialties warned me to flush out the water jackets of the engine,
because he had found some rust inside an engine he took apart. Well,
I think it might take more than a quick flush to clean this out.
Here is a picture that Bruce sent from my engine that he reworked. Yep,
there's rust alright. If you have one of these engines, it's probably worth
taking it apart to clean this up. I really wonder how long these engines
sat around.
