I don't know why you get the message you do on the pictures. Others can diagnose this for you. However, I can suggest a fix for your problem.

Go to http://www.irfanview.com/ and download the free viewer. You can change the file size by changing how much compression there is. Getting a one megapixel shot down below 100K is easily doable.
