Marc, you are referring to the nitrideing of the side plates. Nitride can be a gas process. Bill The side plates (iron) have some kind of treatment that penetrates them shallowly. At one time shops still were able to retreat the ground ones- it was a gas of some sort mixed with ammonia? Ernest, You are correct. The housings are porous chrome. Don’t think Mazda invented nikasil but I’m sure they tested it. I know there were several companies testing it or running it in the Early 70’s. Bill I was looking into nikasil coatings and was surprised to read that it was originally developed by Mazda for the rotary engines. I thought the rotor housings were chrome plated. Is it really nikasil instead?
