Steve,
                That incident involved taking off with a known crack in the belt.  My solution is to replace the fan belt annually.  $30 is cheap insurance for a single point failure.  There are many single point failures that we all fly with.  Engine,  prop, tyres, etc.  There is no such thing as Zero risk.
    Perhaps I have lived long enough to realise I must eventually die??

In relation to the CAS
After an incident here in Perth Western Australia, I chose to make changes to the CAS wiring.
It being a single point of failure.

A Glasair 3, IO540 with dual electronic ignition, had a belt failure which took our its single CAS input.
Pilot did an emergency landing onto a school oval totalling the aircraft and both pilot and passenger spent many months in hospital with horrific burns.

I chose to install the BUSENSOR option.
Now the CAS itself electrically an inherently reliable devise.
But it is just plastic and vulnerable to breakage if struck.
And the wiring harness may be vulnerable.
I added a stainless steel cable into the CAS wiring, anchored securely to protect it from a belt breakage.
