The shape you see today, Wankel copied from patent drawings. His idea was to build a housing around that shape and have it spin inside for a totally balanced rotary motion. Two were built like that by NSU. very small sized for Mopeds. NSU tried to patent the engine and found that a fellow named Bernard Maillard held the patent as a brake air compressor for trucks. Maillard  worked for truck builder Adolph Saurer.  The patent was gifted to NSU/Wankel so long as it was not produced as a compressor. Wankel was a cheat. Among other things.  NSU came up with the engine as you know it.     And now you know..................LEH

Thanks, Bob; any idea whether he's still flying it? That's not the name
I recall, but I'm not surprised that there's more than one gyro guy
using the rotary. The guy I'm thinking about had, IIRC, over 1500 hrs on
his, and it might have been a 12A instead of a 13B.

A quick scan didn't reveal anything 'new', but there is a lot of stuff I haven't seen compiled in one location before. (And the inevitable handful of errors, of course...)
