Greetings,
In
talking with Tracy this morning, I found that there's an undocumented (in my
manual) brightness setting for the EM-2. You can cycle through the 4
different brightness levels by hitting the Ack button on any screen but the
timer (I think). Anyway, I suspected that I had changed the brightness
without knowing it, and sure enough, that was the case. I found it on the
2nd brightest setting, rather than the brightest. This is a whole lot
brighter than what I had, so it will be better during daylight operation.
Tracy did say that it can still wash out at times though. In retrospect,
it's still better than the RMI that I had in my RV-8, because when that went
black due to heat, you were screwed until it cooled off. At least I can
shade the EM-2 to read it if necessary.
Hey
Finn, I know you don't have the cowl extensions on your plane, but do you have
the rear of the cowl cheeks blocked off, or are they open? I'm thinking
they're probably blocked off, but I can't recall for sure. I looked at
installing mine today, and realized that it was going to require significant
work, since the rear cheek bulkhead doesn't come close to fitting. After
looking at it a while, I decided (rationalized) that it would be better (easier)
to leave these open for now, to get extra cooling for the first flight (fly
sooner). I'm also deferring the work on the ring of the cowl behind the
spinner that isn't quite aligned with the thrust angle. The smallest
gap is 1/8", and the largest is 3/4", so it's close enough for now.
Amazing how much progress I can make by putting things off to later
:-)
I
should be very close to flying by Sunday, but it will certainly be another week
or so, after that.
Cheers,
Rusty
