Subject: [FlyRotary] Re: Nothing ever
goes Smoothly!
In spite of all the glitches it is good to hear of all the progress on
rotary projects. Snags being the norm, mine are no exceptions.
The Renesis transplant was going smoothly after a rocky start (see
website for details) but I was hoping to do some minor mods to my old intake
manifold and stick it on the Renesis. No Go, the secondary ports are
significantly wider spaced and bolt pattern is way different. So,
since the new manifold is probably not going to happen until after Sun 'n Fun
I started on Plan B which was to put a 2.85 : 1 RD-1C drive on my
current 2nd gen engine along with the new prop I got from Performance
prop.
Got the drive swapped out today (the B drive still looks perfect inside
after ~ 500 hours) but things went down hill fast. New prop is Right
hand so the cutouts in the spinner & bulkheads were wrong (duh,
should have seen that one). Had a new spinner on hand that I was going
to put on the -4 (the existing one has a slight wobble) so started trimming it
for the new prop. Then did a trial fit and found that the prop bolts are
too short. New prop has a monster 88" pitch that required a thicker
hub. It is also lots longer (74"). Ordered new prop bolts.
Will spend the next few days tweaking my cooling system ducts to improve the
cooling enough to handle the increased power I hope the engine will make at
6800 rpm which is what I am guessing it will turn with the C drive & big
stick.
It would have been a cinch to make the 220 mph mark to collect the
Everett Hatch prize in the upcoming Sun 100 race with the Renesis but I might
still have a shot at it.

Ah, Yes! The old "simple" modification nightmare
{:>). Wow! 88" of pitch and 74" in diameter. Be interesting to
see what you get out of that RV-4 with that prop. With that
diameter prop, you'll probably have to take off in a 3 point
position {:>).
Can't wait to see the results - my calculations
indicated you should see over 218 mph TAS.
