Just another case of using old, long known principals to solve new
problems. Tesla would have known this one as well.
A sponsor bought us a set of fancy Racing Radios. (Not cheap) We tried them
out the next weekend and had to go back to the pit board because of white noise.
Nothing understandable came through the radio when the engine was running.
Without the engine they were great.
I asked another competitor about this, and he asked if I changed my plug
wires to spiral core. End of story. I changed the wires and all was well with
the radios.

In this case "shielded" is the wrong term. The spiral wire does
not actually shield the noise, it prevents the noise from being transmitted.
It acts as an inductor to prevent the propagation of the noise
generated at the spark gap from propagating up the wire.
