I have a friend who is lead engineer at one of the dust collector companies, so I asked him about their impellers.  Here is his response:

" typically our fan wheels are used in the 3500-4500 rpm range.  We have tested to 5000rpm successfully, but have never failure tested to see where the max is.  They are dynamic 2-plane balanced to ISO 603 specs, the same as aircraft turbines, but this doesn’t reflect their strength under stress."

If this sparks any further questions, let me know and I'll pass them on.  He also told me in a separate email that their turbines are designed after jet turbines.

A guy in my EAA Chapter owns Great Plains Aviation which specializes in VW conversions. They have a flywheel that doubles as a generator.

Of course that is a direct drive turning less than 3000 rpm but interesting just the same.
