They are not on all pickups, most have a simple oval flange with mounting holes. FWIW, I extended my pickup by the simple expedient of heating the pickup tube a bit and bending it down 1/2" . It's worked for 1800 hours so I don't think it creates any problems. Tracy On Tue, May 3, 2011 at 11:48 AM, wrote: > Thank you, everyone who offered their observations on my project. =A0=A0 I've often wondered what those disks were for.=A0=A0 Th= ey are not on all pickups, most have a simple oval flange with mounting hol= es.

FWIW, I extended my pickup by the simple expedient of heating th= e pickup tube a bit and bending it down 1/2" .=A0 It's worked for = 1800 hours so I don't think it creates any problems.

Although I still like the elegance of using o-rings, the simplest way to pu= t a suitable groove for the o-ring requires a $40 annular cutter that I don= 't know I'd ever have another use for. =A0I suppose that I could re= cover the cost of the tool, if enough other people wanted to buy such a par= t, but it also sounds like a lot of folks here are moving away from the bed= mount. =A0So, I'm taking the KIS route.

Now I have another question. =A0It may be that I just haven't looked in= the right places for the information I want, but I can't fathom what&#= 39;s going on with the pickup in the second photo. =A0The reason I made the= part on the left of photo 1 was to provide clearance for the four disks th= at are staked into those recesses. =A0What are they there for? =A0There are= four galleys leading from the inside of the center hole to the four recess= es. =A0They look rather like freeze plugs, but the physics looks wrong for = protecting against overpressure. =A0If I use the spacer on the right, do I = induce some risk by blocking those disks?
