So, in the event that the thrust spacer slides out along the crank as you remove the pulley (often the case) the rear thrust bearing cannot slip down and hang on the crank to be crushed by the spacer on reassembly. I use bungee cords as it is a simple thing to hook around the edge of the starter ring and find spots on the engine to hook the other end. If the engine is in the car, push the clutch pedal down and place a length of broom stick between the seat and the pedal to hold it down. For automatics, take off the dust cover and pound in a tight fitting chunk of wood between the transmission face and the torque converter. Do not forget that block of wood is there................... PS: The USA not counting offshore or Alaska has more oil than all of the worlds oil producing countries combined, except for Canada, which shares the Bakken formation with us. And very little of Canada has been explored. At current consumption rates that will last but another 2,000 years. To have our necks on the Saudi chopping block hoping the oil flow is never cut off is suicidal. When the fanatics win over there, we will never see another drop of Mid East oil. Imagine this winter in the North East with no home heating oil and no diesel for standby power for hospitals or shelters. No diesel for snow plows. No way to evacuate Millions? of people.
