Some engine builders will cut a recess for the o-ring and omit the plastic washer AND the front cover gasket. And use gray Permatex instead of the front cover gasket. The o-ring is NOT optional. Here you have full pressure of the oil pump.

One way to make sure the Permatex really sticks is to clean the surfaces with alcohol before applying the sealant. And let it cure a bit before tightening the bolts to final torque values.
