There were several failure modes, and the most likely to be the cause of SAG. The problem was called tracking. We believed the problem was caused by a carbon burn etching on to the insulator. Often the burn was frequently hidden behind the side wire because that area wasn't as hot as the rest of the insulator and didn't burn off the carbon. You should take a look at the SAG plugs and check if there is a dark line running between the center electrode and shell metal. You might need to remove the side wire to find it. It is not a black line, rather a grey and shiny one. The plug will often fire normally in air but when the pressure comes up the plug will fire down the carbon stripe, causing a misfire.
