Hi Jeff, see Mark's message regarding larger pulley. Regarding belts, I tried some store-brand belts and went though one In less than 10 hours. I now only use GATES belts - the latest one I have on has over 300 hours on it and it still look brand new. Sometimes quality does count {:>)

Ed, On the same subject, how many hours are you getting out of your alternator belts?
I’ve got about 50 hours on mine and am seeing black powder on the top cowling underside and the same on the belts.
And where can I get a 4” diameter dual-groove pulley for the rotary?
I bought one from Racing Beat but it is only about 2.75-3” diameter … would like to slow my alternator more.

No, Joe, I did not. I had not realized at the time (boy, have I gained an education messing with this alternative engine stuff {:>)) that simply putting a circuit breaker in the field coil line would not necessarily turn off the alternator when it was pulled. I have verified that pulling the CB after the alternator is turning does NOT turn it off - at least not mine. But, I never had an automobile alternator ever run away voltage wise (all have simply quite producing adequate voltage), so decided to leave well enough alone.
I figured my modifications might reduce reliability and never the kind of problem most feared in aircraft usage, so have not altered/modified it. But, other's have. It would be interesting to take a survey and find out how many on the list have or have not modified their alternators.

Joe, I still fly with the old standard Rx-7 alternator - have been ever
since I launched in 1998 - never failed so I'm still hauling around about
5
lbs more weight that I need to. So can't offer you any light weight
solutions. But, there are others that have done research on light weight
alternators whom I'm certain will offer suggestions.
