Beat you to it by a few years......   20+ years ago I purchased a Mazda 12A powered pickup which gave up the ghost a year or so later....  A cute pickup, and fun to drive, I installed a Buick 225 (odd fire) V6 which I coupled to a 5 speed Toyota transmission  (Toyota because of the removable bell housing... unusual in light 5 speeds).  With glass pack mufflers and 2" chrome stacks I rattled the windows and walls around town for years.  The conversion included installing a 3.9:1 ratio rear axle from a Chevy pickup... just a bit wider than the front, but that didn't bother me any.   My love affair with this little hot rod pickup lasted a number of years until I sold it and replaced it with an extended cab Datsun.  The V6 made a great conversion, though it was a bit of a challenge.   If I had an RX7 with a bum engine I wouldn't hesitate a minute to do the same but I would probably use the 4.0 Ford V6 due to it's narrower build (60 degree)....though it is significantly longer than the 4.3.

[Hey guys, this is a "rotary engines in airplanes" list...  think we could get back on track, please?
