If you are ordering tubing I would order 321 which is most often used on exhausts. The 316 of 316L is generally soft and used for chemical or gas transmission lines. 316 is a quality material but not necessarily the right material for this application.

I only used the pool rail as I had the scraps laying around. It is good enough for a mock up but nto for a real exahaust. It allowed me to get my shapes and cuts defined for the real thing.  It is only 1&7/8 inch  OD as well so it does not match well with the 2&1/8 inch holes on the racing beat flange. FWIW the pool rail pieces came off a salt water pool so it may be rated for it as it has no eveidence of degradadtion from this use. It does seam quite soft and easy to cut and grind. I'll be ordering some 316 stuff soon.

Pool handrail is much more likely to be 303 or 304 ss. 316 is much more expensive and is normally used only for speciality tubing.

Swimming pool handrail is most likely 316ss, but .045" is approx 1.2mm thick and you would want 1.6mm ( .062") for exhaust headers.

That is actually very heplfull. On monday I will go to my local supplier and see if I can lay my hands on some sched 5 or ched 10 SS ells and see what they look like. I did mock something up with some of the pool handrail SS pipe I have but not sure about the material as it is onlly .045 thick wall and I do not know what grade SS it is.
