Dale,
I have one of Tracy's RD1B drives on my Cozy. I did have one issue with it
early on. Tracy used to weld the gear on the shaft, and on mine the weld
broke, which caused the gear to slip, and then it would seize to the shaft
again. Made for a very interesting take off. Since then, Tracy changed the
design and the gears are attached with a rather large pin through the shaft.
Tracy told me that he only had two people have that problem, and both were
on turbo engines.
I think that was at about 12-15 hours of flying time when it happened. I
have about 60 hours on it now, and no other issues. I think that the
discussion on the Cozy group was dealing with Soob's running Ross re-drives.
I believe that there have been a lot more problems with those, from what
I've heard, but I don't have first hand experience with those drives.
If I were going to build another, I'd use Tracy's drive again. It is good
quality, relatively low weight, and the gear set he uses (Ford C6) has a
proven reliability.

Subject: [FlyRotary] RWS reduction drive
Hi All,
Over on the COZY list, there has been some discussion centered around
one flyer's most recent problem with his "PSRU". A question came up as
to whether any of the reduction drives are actually operating
(relatively) trouble free. It got no particular response. Seems like
there are a lot more RVs flying with "auto-based" engines requiring
gearing down, and I've only heard of one rotary engine that didn't use a
reduction drive. Soooooo ...
How many folks here are flying with a RWS RD-nx?
What sort of troubles (if any) have you had with it?
How many hours flown since the last incident requiring maintenance?
I'd like to share the information I obtain with the COZY group, but only
in the aggregate - no names (unless someone volunteers as a reference).
Also, as a COZY builder, I'd feel kind of silly joining an RV list just
to ask the questions. Is someone here that's also on an RV list where
alternative power is common who would post my three questions with a
feed directly back to me?
Thanks,
Dale R.
