George,

there is no secret in m balancing scheme. I calculate the requirements and machine the flywheel accordingly. The flywheel is than checked for the right unbalance. The next step is checking the counter weight for unbalance, and determine how much material has to be added to it.

With doing it that way, the guy at Mazdatrix was surprised how little he had to do to the counter weight and the flywheel. This means the analytical balancing is a tool you need to apply is you don't want surprises.

The first picture shows the measuring setup for the unbalance moment. The flywheel picture is from before dynamic balancing. The difference from before and after is only a couple of 1/2" holes.

It has been a frustrating 7 month, trying to get the single rotor dynamically balanced. After a lot of fellows on the lists trying to help, I called Mazdatrix, and as of last week I got the parts back from them balanced. The engine is going back together right now for continuing testing.
The main effort is now designing and testing the intake and establishing a performance baseline.

I made some changes on the outside of the engine. For example the lower engine mount points are now on the front of the engine to provide mounting areas for radiator and oil cooler. The location is much like with a Shertz Beam on the two rotor.
The third mounting point is on the oil pump cover at a location similar to the 12A front mount in the car. I don't have pictures yet, but the castings should be here any time now.
I am also working on getting a magneto ignition in.

The e-shaft in the picture was taken before hardening and grinding.

I hope to be able to do shorter update intervals in the future.

Richard,

I know our designs are different, but I would love to know the outcome of the balancing i.e. balance weights front and back, difference between static and dynamic balance.

Would you mind sharing those numbers with me?
