Don't worry (or should I say: DO worry) they will catch up. Remember how Japanese stuff was regarded as junk?
The Chinese may have a lot of catching up to do, but blink, and they'll have surpassed us.

If their machine tool exports are any indication, it's going to take a very long blink - like maybe a Rip VanWinkle  catnap?
With any luck, the Chinese automobiles will suffer the same fate as the Yugo.

But then again, has anyone here bought a water pump for an American car lately?  China or Mexico.  They don't want your old core - they're too expensive to rebuild, compared to getting them new from overseas.  And the cores from the overseas pumps that I've seen aren't worth trying to rebuild.

Guess it doesn't really matter much.  There isn't much "American" in most American cars anymore, anyway - 'cept the assembly labor, maybe.
