Lynn and
Bill,
I googled it, which I should have done initially
and some sites stated it had been around for about 30 years. I guess they
didn't really need it then. I tell my Son, back in 1967 I remember
getting fuel for 5 cents a liter or 20 cents a gallon - he can't believe it. I
guess that's 40 years ago, but you know what I mean. Does anyone remember what
it cost in the US in 1967
The lowest price I can remember was .20 cents per gallon. Bulk motor oil
was 15 cents per quart.
These prices included premiums if you bought a full tank. They would give
you a fancy water glass and when you had 8 of them they would give you a
matching pitcher. There were other give away items like towels and face cloths.
Just to buy fuel. The competition to get you to buy one brand of fuel over
another was fierce.
There were more brands of fuel than today. If you got enough fillups
getting a ticket punched each time, you could get a free car wash. They could
hire kids back then and it was a great way to get started as a mechanic. Every
customer got his oil checked and if needed the water topped off. Checking tire
pressure was free as well. And of course the attendant would wash your
windscreen while pumping the fuel.
A great time to grow up.
