The competition to get you to buy one brand of fuel over another was fierce. There were more brands of fuel than today. If you got enough fillups getting a ticket punched each time, you could get a free car wash. They could hire kids back then and it was a great way to get started as a mechanic. Every customer got his oil checked and if needed the water topped off. Checking tire pressure was free as well. And of course the attendant would wash your windscreen while pumping the fuel.
