Remove the cable. Cut it in half and put it in the nearest trash can. Buy or make another cable.
I work in a networking lab. Lots and lots of cables. This is standard procedure. The cable can have an intermittent break in it anywhere along it's length. The fact that it works sometimes and not others means that you will never know when it will work, so it is best to remove it completely from the equation.
