Thanks for the great info.  I thought I had read (maybe from Lynn) that welding the housings was a bad idea.  Have you actually welded any of these George?  Got any pics?
 
If a light press (small hammer <g>) fit with epoxy is OK, then that sounds like the way to go.  Shouldn't be too tough to come up with some mechanical method of holding the tube on the outside.  Lynn, would there be a problem TIG welding the aluminum tube to the outer portion of the housing?  Just 3 or 4 telltale spots would probably be enough.  
 
Jerry, how did you ever shape the end of that tube without scratching the housing???  Absolutely beautiful :-)
