Anecdotal evidence, here. The fuel pump in my spouse's car (Cavalier) quit. I took it out of the tank and it tested good; put it back (mistake - it worked for one day, then quit again). A closer inspection showed that the intake screen was falling apart and either letting in debris from the tank, or pieces of the screen fiber were getting sucked into the pump and jamming it. The vehicle was 11 years old at the time.

accuracy how fuel pumps fail? I doubt they fail
catastrophically. I suspect they fail by degrees (probably very
gradually as the poorly maintained filter clogs up).
