I do the same thing Rusty, I just run both fuel pumps all the time. If
you run one pump and it fails, the engine will stop running
immediately. If you run an EWP and it fails, your engine won't quit
immediately, so you would have a little time to switch over to the other
EWP.

I see no problem with that operational procedure. However, I have
flown with my
two pumps for over 4 years with no problem. I do a check each annual
by blocking the pressure regulator and seeing what max pressure (with
no flow) the pumps will give. Initially they both would produce 80 psi
(no flow), I only use my secondary during take off and landing, well
they main pump has slowly decreased in the max pressure it will produce
and is now down to 60 psi (the backup pump still give
80 psi), so I attribute the dropping of the main pumps pressure due to
wear and will replace it next annual.
Has anyone experience a pump failure - I know - we have so relative few
flying hours (other than perhaps Tracy Crook)that the lack of failure
may be fairly meaningless. Just wondering
