I think everybody thinks it an "RV grin", but I really found the FWF to be the most satisfying part of the project and to fly behind it really is great, so it's more of a "Rotary Smile" what kind of plenum do you have for your radiators? With that kind of d-T, it sounds like you must have an excellent plenum. I shaped them using foam and fibreglass, trying to make the smoothest transition possible from opening to rad, but it is a fairly short distance so the optimum 7 degree angle was just not possible (heck, I didn't even know about it back then:-). As the ford cores are a little smaller but thicker they allowed me to mount them perpendicular to the airflow allowing the cooling fins to be aligned with airflow. I can't prove that this makes a difference but it certainly can't hurt. This also made it easier to have a smooth flowing plenum. I don't have any ductwork on the backside of the coolers. On the left side it will never be possible to add this due to the proximity of the turbo, but on the right side I have plenty of room. I've considered adding a set of louvers on the right side of the cowl and ducting the right rad outlet to exit the louvers. This is not to improve the coolant temps, but rather to off load the exit air from the outlet duct, as this should help the oil cooler. A plenum on the oil cooler outlet would help but would be very difficult to build around the nose gear. What kind of oil cooler do you have? Stock Mazda? What do you suppose would happen if you used another evaporator core for an oil cooler? Seems thicker is better (and it might fit better under the cowl). Loving all the good news ... Jim S.
