Re: [FlyRotary] NO2 Bottle
Explosion
Being I have been around NOS for so many years I bet
I know what Happened.
NOS has a big expansion and contraction rate with heat and
if you fill a tank to capacity and it heats up to much it will blow
the blow off disk, NOS bottles are rated for 1800 lbs and they have a
3000 lb safety disk in them and if you have a good tank with a current
hydro the disk will blow before the tank blows.
I would bet that some punk kid got tired of the disks
blowing out on him and installed a higher pressure disk like a 4200
psi disk from a 3000 lb tank.
I transfer fill my own tanks and during hot weather I only
put 8 lbs in a 10 lb tank to give more expansion aria for a safety
margin.

Hi
Bill,
Yes, I realize that
being only an oxidizer that without fuel, you would not have a
combustion type explosion. But as the photo of the guy's car
shows - even the overheated bottle by itself made an impressive amount
of shredded metal out of his car. Like you point out - a burst
water heater can do an unbelievable amount of
damage.
But, I hate to
think of what it would have been like had fuel been available when the
bottle burst.
Since the bottle shows
no sign of scorching, fairly clear no combustion took
place.
Here's the
link if you want to look at more photos http://www.healthyhome.net/NOS2.htm
One thing having this
happen to back-end of parked car, another thing to think of it in my
airplane.
Not trying
to imply NO2 is not safe handled properly - Its just
I just don't need THAT kind of boost {:>).
