a certain popular test pilot, let's just call him mike, likes to fly with the owner after completing his maiden flights.  this makes a lot of sense to me, but is a grey area with the faa.

This is interesting. In the USA we are not allowed to carry passengers until the 40 hour test period is flown off.

I'm going from memory here, but I think you can carry a test engineer if his presence is required for the test.
