I'd say 4700 is the right number. This only happens during run-up.
I was wondering if it might be something with the injector circuit.

That is more than enough rpm change to hear (depending on the accuracy of the hearer : ) so something is screwy.  Which reading do you think is the "real" one, 4200 or 4700?  Electrical noise (the bane of the composite aircraft builder) is a possibility.

This discussion leads me to a question.
My rpm reading seems accurate most of the time, but varies a lot during a run-up.
For example, if I bring the rpm to 4700 rpm the rpm reading will remain steady for a few seconds, then drop to around 4200, then bounce around between 4700 and 4200 without any movement of the throttle or change in engine sound.
Any thoughts?
